COVID-19: Thrombotic Complications and Therapy

COVID-19: Thrombotic Complications and Therapy

Jonathan L. Halperin, MD, discusses the hemostatic abnormalities in hospitalized COVID-19 patients, including impaired fibrinolysis, elevated D-dimers, and inflammatory increase of cytokines—factors which create an increased need for mechanical ventilation and increased mortality. Dr. Halperin describes the progression of COVID-19, and the threat of the complication of both deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, as well as the impact of lung damage on coagulation. The Mount Sinai panel provides perspectives on effective patient evaluation, management, and antithrombotic strategies.
