Mount Sinai Otolaryngology Surgical Series: TORS Robotic Resection of HPV-Related Tonsil and Throat Cancer

Mount Sinai head and neck surgical oncologists are at the forefront of treating head and neck cancers using minimally invasive, transoral robotic surgery. As one of the first adopters of this technology, we also have a wealth of experience in deploying it effectively. Where surgery to access the back of the throat would have previously required splitting the jaw in half and a two week stay in the hospital, many of these tumors are resected robotically through the mouth and with a short stay in the hospital. The surgical robot can be used for tonsil and base of tongue cancers, many of which are HPV+. The robot can also be used for tumors of the larynx and nasopharynx, albeit less commonly so.
