The Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) has released its first comprehensive, evidence-based guidelines for the care of adults with functioning pituitary adenomas (FPAs), a common yet complex condition. Designed for neurosurgeons, endocrinologists, and other specialists, the guidelines aim to standardize treatment, improve patient outcomes, and enhance multidisciplinary collaboration. Based on a review of roughly 20,000 published abstracts, the recommendations are detailed across four papers (43 pages plus supplemental data) published as an online supplement to Neurosurgery, the official CNS journal published by Wolters Kluwer.
Endorsed by both the CNS and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), the guidelines were spearheaded by Isabelle M. Germano, MD Professor of Neurosurgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and D. Ryan Ormond, MD of the University of Colorado School of Medicine. The development process brought together a national, multidisciplinary panel of 18 experts in neurosurgery, endocrinology, neuroradiology, and radiation oncology. This collective effort represents a significant advancement in providing clear, actionable, and unified recommendations for managing FPAs.
